How I describe what I do depends on who is asking. On paper, Meta Physica is a wellness center offering massage, bodywork, and infrared saunas. But what we’re really offering is access—access to quality care in a city that hasn’t always had enough of it. I started as a massage therapist in a single-room studio, and I’ve never lost sight of what this is actually about: someone comes in carrying something heavy in their body and they leave lighter. We built this practice for the people who never saw themselves reflected in the wellness landscape, an industry that has long catered to a narrow, frankly fascistic idea of who wellness is for. Everyone is welcome here, and that has always been intentional.
I opened the doors in 2012 in the Cass Corridor without a substantial clientele, just an intention. What I didn’t anticipate was the scale of the need; the expansion wasn’t a strategy, it was a response to a community that kept asking for more. That’s what keeps me rooted here. Detroit has a particular relationship with resilience that makes the work better. There’s a responsibility that comes with being part of this community. It is intimate compared to other big cities, and it doesn’t reward pretense.
My life here is defined by that honesty and the shift of the seasons. Having lived all over Detroit for 30 years, memories are everywhere, but right now, Lafayette Park is home. The juxtaposition of Mies van der Rohe’s modernist design with the trees and parks is essential to me. My rituals are non-negotiable: mornings start with coffee and friends at Anthology or Trinosophes, and Saturdays are for groceries and flowers at Eastern Market, without fail. When the weather turns brutal in the winter, I double down on wellness and head to the sauna.
Most visitors focus on a “comeback” narrative, but the truth is that Detroit has always been cool. There is a continuity to what this city creates. The music, art, and culture people love originated here, and it doesn’t need a revival story to justify it. If you have a short time here, go to DABLS African Bead Museum or the Heidelberg Project, which are places uniquely Detroit. Walk the Belle Isle Bridge, grab breakfast at Trinosophes, or browse the stacks at Periodicals, one of my favorite magazine shops in the world.
The city is at its best in the summer, when it just ignites. You hear the music spilling out everywhere and you see a specific energy in how people dress and move. I’ve always been drawn to spaces that share that level of intentionality, which is why I’ve loved the Foundation Hotel since it opened. I remember walking there from Corktown early in the morning just to sit in the light of those huge lobby windows. There is a parallel in our philosophies: the idea that nothing is accidental. The moment you step into the Foundation or Meta Physica, a shift occurs. You’re invited to slow down, to observe, and to restore. I want people to leave this city feeling inspired, understanding that Detroit’s soul is eternal and omnipresent. You just have to move at a pace that allows you to find it.
